Besides enlarging your knowledge about the topic, writing a literature review lets you gain and demonstrate skills in two areas. It may be written as a stand-alone paper or to provide a theoretical framework and rationale for a research study (such as a thesis or dissertation). Occasionally you will be asked to write one as a separate assignment (sometimes in the form of an annotated bibliography—see the bottom of the next page), but more often it is part of the introduction to an essay, research report, or thesis. What is the specific thesis, problem, or research question that my literature review helps to define? A narrow-scope literature review may be included as part of a peer-reviewed journal article presenting new research, serving to situate the current study within the body of the relevant literature and to provide context for the reader. While a summary of the what you have read is contained within the literature review, it goes well beyond merely summarizing professional literature.
